Step-by-step plan:10,000 steps per day

Research has shown that we take an average of 6,000 steps. Keep track of how many steps you take per day. Can't get to 10,000 steps? This way you increase the number of steps you take to 10,000 per day.

Step 1:Keep track of the number of steps you take for a while
Most recent smartphones already have an app that keeps track of your steps. You can also download the free Moves app or buy a pedometer. After one or two weeks, see how many steps you take on an average day.

Step 2:Determine your goal
Can you take more steps on working days, or do you already regularly take 10,000 steps in a day? Set yourself an achievable goal. If you take an average of 5,000 steps a day, going for 10,000 right away is probably not easy to sustain. Aim for 6,000 steps per day. As soon as it becomes easier for you, you can increase your goal again.

Step 3:Determine how you can achieve your goal
How do you ensure that you take more steps. Examples of how to achieve this:
– Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
– Spend the time you have to wait, for example at the station or at the doctor, on foot.
– Park the car a little further away or get off two bus stops earlier.
– Go for a walk during your break.
– Go out for a walk in the evening or on the weekend.
– Walk to the supermarket.
– Walk back and forth while talking on the phone.

Step 4:Make it a habit
Once something becomes a habit, it is easier to stick to it. But how do you ensure that taking 10,000 steps a day becomes a habit? Try to integrate walking into your life as much as possible. Also read our tips to get yourself into a new habit.
