How do you motivate yourself to (continue to) exercise in December?

The statistics of our platform have provided disturbing insights in recent weeks. There is much less training. Our friends report the same. They all indicate that November and December are difficult months to stay motivated. How can you motivate yourself to keep training? Or just pick up sports?

I will start again in January

So there is a lot less training. The days are short. It is colder and often wet. When we ask how that feels, the answer is not positive. Less energy, lifeless and bloated by all the chocolate gingerbread cookies. You may recognize this. You already exercise somewhere, but it doesn't work this time either. You don't exercise at all and you don't really feel good about it. Now that the holidays are approaching, you might think:I'll start again in January. However, it will take 31 (!) days before the Christmas holidays are over. In addition, it is only 1 day of Sinterklaas and only 2 days of Christmas. So on those other 28 days you have no reason not to exercise or to stuff yourself with sugars. So you are going to make a choice.

Consciously consider the consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle

You have two choices this month. Or you leave a healthy lifestyle for what it is and plan to start again in January. Or you take good care of yourself by (continuing) training and eating healthy 80 percent of the time. Now sit down and visualize the consequences of each choice:

  • No energy versus mountains of energy
  • Feeling depressed on the gloomy days versus feeling good (due to the endorphins released during exercise)
  • Can't get out of bed versus jump out of bed fresh and fruity, looking forward to the new day
  • Feeling bloated in your beautiful Christmas outfit versus feeling radiant in your Christmas dress (because of course we will still wear it even if we celebrate it small this year)
  • Feeling stressed versus feeling more relaxed and positive
  • Feeling lifeless versus you can be the shining light for your family and your environment
  • Taking a very long road to fitness in January versus working on an even fitter you in January
  • Have to lose a few extra kilos in January versus only having to dot the i's in January

What do you choose?

So the question for you now is:What do you choose? Make that choice consciously now. Do you choose to start in January? That's totally fine. Then stand by that choice and don't weary your environment with complaining about all those moments when you sin or about how bad you feel. It is your conscious choice.

Do you choose to work on a fitter you in December? Then decide today how and when you will do that. Plan your workouts and exercise times. Think about how you want to eat and when you allow yourself to have those 20 percent unhealthy eating moments. And above all, enjoy those moments.

Nice extra if you start training now!
