Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic disease causing abdominal pain and bowel movement disorders. Several factors favor its appearance (fatigue, anxiety and stress, unbalanced diet, etc.). This pathology is generally harmless due to its chronicity. However, it can affect the quality of life of those affected. It rarely affects children and adolescents. However,women are more vulnerable than men.

What are the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome?

Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are characterized by:

  • Abdominal pain characterized by cramping or a feeling of spasm;
  • Bloating (these can be accentuated when wearing tight clothes);
  • Digestive disorders (constipation, diarrhoea).

In some cases, this pathology is linked to other diseases such as:

  • Headaches;
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Painful bladder syndrome (interstitial cystitis);
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome (myalgic encephalomyelitis).

How to relieve irritable bowel syndrome?

Do you often suffer from irritable bowel syndrome? To relieve the symptoms, you must start by adopting a healthy lifestyle. For this, avoid tobacco, coffee and alcohol, as they promote intestinal spasms. Also limit chewing gum and raw vegetables which tend to cause abdominal pain. Finally, choose foods that are light and easy to digest until the pain is completely gone.

Even if the symptoms have disappeared, your digestive system needs a few days of rest before resuming a normal diet. To do this, gradually reintroduce the foods that have been banned, especially those that are the most irritating. The ideal is to reintegrate one food per day in order to identify which ones you tolerate best and which ones you should limit.

In practice, start by reintroducing low-fiber vegetables:carrots, lettuce, green beans, spinach, tomatoes, asparagus, white leeks... Then gradually reintegrate raw vegetables (preferably finely grated and without the skin), then fruits well ripe. Finally, add pulses and fiber-rich grain products to your diet.
