Healthy-Kelly:Tips to stay motivated

Kelly (27) has already lost twenty kilos. Losing weight, like everything in life, involves trial and error. Kelly shares her tips for staying motivated despite everything.

Kelly: Before I started losing weight I felt tired, unhappy and unwell. I was at 90 kilos and I thought:I have to pull on the brake before it really goes further out of the scuppers. That was the first step for me towards the new me.

Of course we all want everything to run smoothly and everything to go downhill, but just like everything else, weight loss involves trial and error. That is quite difficult, because how do you stay motivated? There is actually no unequivocal answer to this, it will be different for everyone. These are the tips that have helped me, or people around me, to stay motivated:

1. Tell someone close to you that you are in the process of losing weight and ask him/her if you can occasionally complain when you are having a bad day
Even more importantly:ask him/her if he/she wants to pick you up again on bad days so that you can continue with full of energy.

2. Take a picture of yourself from the past as you would like to be again or of someone you think:This is how I would like to be
Paste this photo in a visible place, for example near the cupboard with goodies and think about your goal and what you have in mind. Which also helps if you've already lost some pounds:sticking up an old photo, this might give you the motivation to think:'I never want to be like that again!'

3. Set realistic goals Losing about half a kilo a week is a good goal. It is not always possible to go with kilos per week. Do you not get the half kilo once? Don't worry, shrug it off and keep going! Of course the temptation is great to give up, but keep your goal (and your photo as you would like to be) in mind.

4. Reward yourself
You can agree with yourself that you will receive a reward for every 5 kilos you lose. Then don't immediately think of food, but opt for a day at the sauna, that nice dress… Think of something that suits you. For example, at the end of a year of fighting the weight, I want to do a photo shoot because that is the ultimate reward for me and at the same time also the recording of my result.

5. Don't be too strict
If you are too strict with yourself, there is a very good chance that you will give up. Enjoying something tasty every now and then is fine, but in moderation. Then make sure that you really choose the best one that you won't regret once you've had it.
